How To Use The Repeater (Substitute) Pennants Because a full set of International Code of Signals flags contain only one of each letter, the Repeaters (1st, 2nd, & 3rd) are used to hoist any four letter and some five (or more) letter combinations. R-A-D-A-R, for example, would be hoisted thus: R-A-D-2nd Repeater-1st Repeater, with the 2nd Repeater indicating the 2nd letter of the string and the 1st Repeater indicating the 1st letter of the string. A-A-R-D-V-A-R-K would be hoisted as: A-1st Repeater-R-D-V-2nd Repeater-3rd Repeater-K. In other words, the 1st Repeater 'repeats' the first letter of the string, the 2nd Repeater 'repeats' the second and so on. The Code Answering Pennant The Code Answering Pennant is used in one of two ways—it should always be the first hoist when signaling (Code) and it can be hoisted alone to indicate that a message from another vessel has been received (Answering).
